This version really makes you want to dance. https://youtu.be/EfRzfnIvxW0?si=cY_aeI7kJ6yffvUu. And speaking of dancing these two as well https://youtu.be/uuaIffSAyYY?si=fQfM9VhK3b3Jdt7h and finally… Not Dark Yet is a centre point of the album and regarded by so many fans, including myself, as one of his finest songs, and the two further versions included here are undoubtedly absolute highlights. The first is a much more upbeat version, which is great but not really in keeping with the vibe of the song, and the other aligned more with the dark and sombre feel of the album version. But, having said that, neither comes close to the superior version on the album. The latest chapter in Columbia/Legacy’s highly acclaimed Bob Dylan Bootleg Series takes a fresh look at Time Out of Mind, Dylan’s mid-career masterpiece, celebrating the album and its enduring impact 25 years after its original release on September 30, 1997. Fragments – Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.17 follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions featuring Dylan (vocals, guitar, and piano), Daniel Lanois (guitar and organ), Tony Garnier (bass) and Tony Mangurian (drums and percussion) through incandescent live renditions (also previously unreleased) showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001. Ben Lazarus Bare and spectral: Bob Dylan’s Fragments – Time Out Of Mind Sessions reviewed Dylan's sombre 1997 masterpiece has been reframed and reimagined At their best, the results offer glimpses of equally thrilling alternative directions the album could have headed in – one early variant of “Can’t Wait” carries a distinctive whiff of dank, juicy New Orleans variant of funk, while another piano-led variant is pure passionate gospel steaminess. Yet another version, a hoped-up live one, gallops with an exuberant energy that is deliciously at odds with the heartbroken frustration of the lyrics. Fragments, which comes as a 5-CD or 10-LP box set (or a 2-CD/4-LP set of highlights), begins with a fresh remix of the full Time Out of Mind album. In these mixes, the entrancing veil of swampy murk is mostly stripped away, revealing a more authentic sense of the rooms in which the sessions were recorded (at Teatro in Oxnard, California, and Criteria in Miami). Dylan’s voice is more upfront, the mix more immediate, live, and spontaneous. CD 2 and 3 – both made up of outtakes and alternate versions – are where things start to get really interesting. Considering the often sombre and spectral mood of Time Out of Mind, it’s fascinating to hear how in some cases the different takes are much more upbeat and lighter than the final recordings.

Dylan: Fragments: Time Out of Mind Sessions Review Bob Dylan: Fragments: Time Out of Mind Sessions Review

Prior to its release, Dylan had been plagued by ill health – a life-threatening respiratory infection caused by inhaling fungus spores, which he put down to riding his Harley in the Louisiana swamps. As Steven Hyden writes in his essay in the excellent hardcover book that accompanies this 5CD box set – Volume 17 in the Bootleg Series and issued to commemorate the album’s 25 th anniversary – when Time Out of Mind emerged, reviewers tagged it as a ‘mortality album’ – pointing to songs like ‘Tryin’ to Get to Heaven’ (“Trying to get to heaven before they close the door”) or ‘Not Dark Yet’, which is written from the point of view of a man confronting his twilight years. These songs were belted. They ended up being dribbled. They ended up sounding wonderful. But transmitting little beyond that. From August to October, he went to Teatro Studio in Oxnard/CA with Daniel Lanois, who had produced his 1989 album Oh Mercy, to record demos for a possible new LP

Fragments sheds light on the gradual development of these songs during the extensive recording sessions, with the songs morphing into sometimes unrecognizable shapes (a robustly funky “Not Dark Yet”) as the album’s concept moved from loop-based minimalism to swampy extemporizations by a large cast of musicians trying their best to hang on as Dylan steered rapidly through ideas and arrangements. They are a cautionary tale to every lover. And as Dylan says "Anything now can happen to anyone." Because he has seen and known the true end of all attachment -Pain.

It is just over 25 years since the release of Time Out of Mind, in September 1997, rekindled Bob Dylan’s career. He was then 56, a legend with a glorious past behind him and a much less auspicious future. The 1990s had not been good to him. The songs had stopped flowing. He had not released any original material since the rightly slated Under the Red Sky, in 1990, recording just two albums of traditional material, Good as I Been to You (1992) and World Gone Wrong (1993). The Bootleg Series Vol. 17: Fragments – Time Out of Mind

Dylan’s voice is cleaner and more audible in the mix, which will please listeners who thought Lanois’ original production was too murky and swampy, and with too many effects on Dylan’s vocals. Is it better than the previous version? That’s one for Dylanologists and diehard fans to debate long into the small hours of one too many mornings but it certainly lets you hear and appreciate the songs and the instrumentation in a whole new light – just listen to the drums on the new mix of ‘Standing in the Doorway’, the organ on ‘Tryin’ to Get to Heaven’ and the dirty blues of ‘Cold Irons Bound’, which will rattle your bones even more than the original. Dylan’s near-fatal illness in 1997 inevitably altered the way in which Time Out Of Mind was received once it had been released, even though the whole situation was merely circumstantial. However, with the benefit of the new remix and a whole bunch of outtakes and alternate takes contained throughout Fragments, we are now able to view this album in a completely new light. Whilst I appreciate there will be a wide range of views on this from within the Dylan community, from a personal perspective, all of this has cemented my view of Time Out Of Mind as one of the greatest albums Dylan has ever released. We can only wonder what other great riches sit within Dylan’s vaults to be uncovered through future releases in the Bootleg Series. Can’t Wait Version 2’ is almost a slow funk dance, though truly not a song you’d ever want to dance to. A ghostly muffled yell shakes you just before the words begin to fall.
